Tenants Of San Francisco Mission District Building Say They're Being Unfairly Evicted
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— About 30 tenants of a San Francisco Mission District-apartment building say they're being unfairly evicted.
They gathered in front of the century-old, three-story apartment building on 3150 26th street to protest not just their eviction, but those of thousands of others across the city.
Patricia Kermin says she's lived here for 30 years.
"This fight is a lot bigger than me; it's a lot bigger than Tom or the people here. This is all about the city of San Francisco," she said through a megaphone.
Tenants say they received their eviction notices without enough warning to take action in court.
Esther Brasha has lived in the building for two years. She says she, like thousands of other apartment dwellers citywide, are being kicked out so her landlord can turn the building into either condos or upscale apartments.
"It's very heartbreaking. I really want to stay in this neighborhood, especially now that is being gentrified. There are a lot of things going on that we help contribute to this. It's like why is it that it's now so much more expensive that we can't even live here?"
The daughter of the building's property owner said her family would have no comment.
