Tenants Feeling Trapped In SF High-Rise After Only Elevator Stays Broken For 5-Weeks
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Tenants are on their wits' end in a San Francisco high-rise after the buildings only elevator broke more than five weeks ago.
The Heartland Hotel on Geary in San Francisco's Tenderloin helps the formerly homeless get back on their feet, many of them with handicaps and disabilities, making it difficult to get up and down stairs.
But, the buildings only elevator stopped working on March 4th.
That means Grace McCloud has to walk up and down four flights of stairs with her cane and scoliosis.
"The pain, from one to ten, it's eight and up sometimes," McCloud said.
Wheelchair-bound Robert Harris needed a team to help him get up and down several flights of stairs.
"I made it down. People helped me down," Harris said outside the building.
Staff at the Hartland told KPIX 5 they are going through numerous lengths to fix the elevator, even finding some tenants other places to live. But, they say the elevator needs to be re-wired, and that takes time.
