Tall Ships Sail Into San Francisco's Pier 40

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Two tall ships will grace the waterfront through February 19, sailing up and down the bay in a hands-on educational excursion.

The Hawaiian Chieftain is a 75 foot tall, 104 foot long (from stern to bow sprit) gaff-rigged topsail ketch. Lady Washington, a two-masted brig, stands 89 feet tall, with a 112 feet overall length.

While their primary role is to education K-12 students about life at sea, the public can also tour the sailing ships for a three dollar donation, or even enjoy two-hour cruises on Monday afternoon leaving from Pier 40.

After departing San Francisco, the ships will dock in Oakland, Redwood City, Antioch, and then back to Sausalito before leaving the bay.
