Tahoe Ski Resort Bans Sale Of Bottled Water

OLYMPIC VALLEY, Calif. (AP) - A Lake Tahoe ski resort is banning the sale of single-use plastic water bottles in hopes of reducing waste.

The Sierra Sun reports that all bottled water has been removed from shops owned and operated in Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows since the beginning of the season.

Resort spokesman Michael Radlick says visitors may purchase a collapsible reusable water bottle for $3 that can be filled at one of 24 refill stations around the ski areas.

Radlick says the resort estimates its Drink Mountain Tap campaign will prevent at least 28,000 plastic bottles from going to landfills annually based on the average bottles sold in the previous two seasons.

No other U.S. ski resort has launched a similar program.
