Swarm Of Small Earthquakes Rattle San Benito & Contra Costa Counties

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA (CBS SF) – Several small earthquakes shook San Benito County and the East Bay early Thursday morning, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's automated seismograph alert network.

The USGS reports four earthquakes ranging in magnitude from .9 to 2.9 struck at various depths near San Juan Bautista in between 2 a.m. and 4 a.m. after a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck the same area.

A magnitude 1 and 2.7 earthquake also struck in Contra Costa County near Walnut Creek in between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m.

The San Benito County quakes were felt in much of Santa Clara County, including San Jose, Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Visitors to the USGS website from Hollister, Santa Cruz, Salinas and Monterey also reported feeling the quakes.
