SUV Strikes Pole Resulting In Hayward Highway Connector Closure

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A highway connector in Hayward has been closed and will reopen sometime later Monday afternoon, following a traffic accident earlier the morning.

At 12:45 a.m., CHP officials issued a Sig-alert and closed the southbound Highway 880 to State Highway 238 connector, after an SUV struck a pole along the Washington Street off-ramp, according to CHP.

An exact time for the connector's reopening has not been given.

At 12:07 a.m., California Highway Patrol first received a report of accident along the off-ramp, CHP officials said.

The crash caused the pole to come down, creating sparks. The sparks then started a brush fire on the right hand shoulder of the off-ramp, according to CHP officials.

Two adults and two juveniles were inside the vehicle that struck the pole. The extent of their injuries is not known at this time, according to CHP.
