2 Suspects Shot Dead, Officers Injured In Gunfight Near Monterey

SAND CITY, Monterey County (CBS SF) -- Two suspects were shot and killed and two police officers hurt in a gunfight near Monterey Monday afternoon, authorities said.

The shootout happened in the parking lot of a Target store in Sand City, according to a dispatcher.

Sand City Police Chief Brian Ferrante said officers were executing warrants on two suspects after getting word they were at the Target store at 2040 California Ave.

The shooting began as officers approached the suspects who were sitting in a car in the store parking lot. It was unclear what prompted the shooting to begin.

The two officers were taken to the hospital with injuries that were not considered life-threatening.

No other injuries were reported.

Seaside police, the California Highway Patrol, the Monterey County Sheriff's Office and other agencies have responded to the scene, she said.
