Suspected DUI Driver Hits, Kills Caltrans Worker In Construction Zone On I-580 In Oakland

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A 33-year-old Caltrans worker was killed early Saturday and one person was arrested in an apparent DUI crash on Interstate 580 near Lake Merritt, the California Highway Patrol said.

The Alameda County Coroner's Office identified the deceased worker as Miguel Rodriguez Delacruz, of Oakland.

The crash happened at about 12:17 a.m. on west I-580 before the Lakeshore Avenue exit, Officer Eric Anderson said. The driver of a silver Honda Accord suspected of DUI was arrested after the crash, Anderson said.

The car was traveling westbound on I-580 and reportedly hit a wall and spun into a work zone.

The name of the driver was not immediately released. Delacruz was a contractor working for Caltrans, which has been repairing portions of the freeway in recent months.
