Suspected Carjacker Surrenders After East Oakland Apartment Standoff; 1 Other Suspect Sought
OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- A suspected carjacker who was barricaded inside an East Oakland apartment complex Tuesday afternoon has surrendered, according to police. A second suspect who fled earlier from the scene remained at large.
Around 10:25 a.m., Oakland Police said officers spotted a vehicle that had been taken during an armed carjacking.
Police chased the vehicle to the 2100 block of East 24th Street where two men ran from the car -- one into an apartment there and the other into nearby yards, authorities said.
Chopper 5 video showed dozens of police on scene - including SWAT officers on the roof of an apartment building. Several surrounding streets were shut down as officers searched for one suspect and tried to negotiate with the other suspect inside the apartment complex.
A hostage negotiator was also called to the scene. Several people in the apartment when the incident started were evacuated.
After several hours of negotiating, the suspect was talked into surrendering, according to police spokeswoman Johnna Watson.
No one was injured.
