Suspect Wounded In Aptos After Opening Fire On Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Deputies

APTOS (BCN) -- A suspect who was shot after firing a round at deputies Tuesday night in Aptos has been identified as 39-year-old Eli Burry of Soquel, the Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office said Wednesday.

Officials said Burry was at the wheel of a suspicious vehicle being investigated by deputies about 10:50 p.m. in the 7900 block of Soquel Drive in Aptos. The deputies recognized Burry, one of two occupants in the vehicle, and also saw he had a handgun, officials said.

While the deputies were trying to detain him, Burry fired a round at them and a deputy fired several shots in return, striking Burry several times, officials said.

Deputies gave Burry medical aid before he was taken to a hospital. He is expected to survive, officials said.

Several weapons, including the one discharged by Burry, were recovered at the scene, officials said.

Burry was the only person injured in the exchange.

Investigation of the officer-involved shooting is being conducted by the Santa Cruz County District Attorney's Office, officials said.

Officials said the names of the deputies involved and the body-worn camera footage are expected to be released next week.

Burry will likely face charges for weapons violations and violent felonies, officials said.
