RICHMOND (KCBS) - A suspect was hospitalized with gunshot wounds after a Richmond police detective opened fire in the parking lot of the Pacific East Mall, according to police.

Two police detectives had tried to detain the suspect around 12 p.m. and one of them subsequently opened fire as the suspect fled in a car, said Capt. Mark Gagan.

Police have not indicated why the detectives tried to stop the suspect.

Gagan said the suspect was seriously injured and required surgery.

Neither of the officers was hurt.

Gagan said the police investigation was causing traffic disruptions on Jacuzzi St. and Pierce St. on either side of Interstate 80, just north of the Interstate 580 split.
