Suspect In Attempted Child Kidnapping Arrested In Emeryville

EMERYVILLE (CBS SF) -- A man was arrested in Emeryville Friday on suspicion of attempting to kidnap a 5-year-old, police said.

Just after 2 p.m., Emeryville police officers responded to a report of an attempted kidnapping at 53rd Street and San Pablo Avenue.

The would-be victim's mother told officers that a family member had been holding her child when the suspect approached and tried to grab the child twice.

The family member then screamed for help, and the suspect fled.

Police officers arrested the man, identified as Eddie Fontenette, on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, child endangerment and a probation violation, police said.

Police believe Fontenette was acting alone. Anyone with information about this incident has been asked to call the Emeryville police at (510) 596-3700.
