Driver Rams San Leandro Patrol Car During Chase, Officer Shoots, Suspect Escapes

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- San Leandro police have released additional details about the police pursuit and officer-involved shooting that happened early Sunday morning.

According to police Lt. Robert McManus, a veteran, uniformed patrol officer tried to stop a vehicle for reckless driving just outside the Trailer Haven mobile home park in the 13600 block of E. 14th Street.

When the driver failed to stop, a high-speed pursuit ensued for about two miles, into a residential neighborhood, McManus said.

The pursuit ended on Woodland Park, a cul-de-sac, near Woodland Avenue.

McManus said that at this point in the pursuit, the suspect turned his car around and rammed the front end of the police vehicle causing moderate damage.

The officer fired at the suspect driver in self-defense, but the driver was able to leave the scene, according to McManus.

Additional responding officers attempted to pursue the fleeing vehicle, but McManus said it was going at speeds exceeding 100 mph through a residential 25 mph zone too fast and the suspect was not captured.

The suspect remains at large, and detectives are now investigating this incident.

It is not known whether the suspect was hit by the gunfire.

As per department policy, the involved officer has been placed on paid administrative leave for up to three days.

Anyone with information about this suspect, his vehicle or whereabouts is asked to call San Leandro police at (510) 577-2740. Anonymous tips can be left at (510) 577-3278.
