Suspect In 2 Bay Area Killings Suspected In 3rd Fatal Shooting in Berkeley

BERKELEY (CBS SF) -- A suspect who was arrested Friday in Nevada in connection with two fatal Bay Area shootings the same day is also a suspect in a third deadly Friday shooting, this one in Berkeley, police said Saturday.

Stefon Jefferson, 43, is also considered a suspect in a homicide that occurred at People's Park at 2556 Haste St. in Berkeley around 2:40 p.m. Friday, University of California police said in a release.

Officers said the People's Park shooting victim was shot by a male suspect who left the scene in a car. The victim died at the hospital, police said.

Authorities said Jefferson was taken into custody late Friday about 7 miles southeast of Lake Tahoe. The Douglas County, Nevada sheriff's department said a sergeant sustained a non-life-threatening injury after being shot. The chase ended when the suspect crashed his car.

Jefferson is suspected of fatally shooting a relative in Oakland Friday morning before heading to San Francisco to kill another relative in the Bayview District.

University of California police now say Jefferson is a suspect in the People's Park shooting as well. UC police did not immediately respond to a request for further comment. Neither Oakland police nor San Francisco police responded immediately to a request for comment Saturday afternoon.

Oakland police said Jefferson was wanted in connection with a shooting in the 4100 block of Market Street in Oakland.

Officers responded to the scene at 10:14 a.m. and located a man suffering from multiple gunshot wounds. The man died at the scene.

Neighbors identified the victim as Marcus Jackson, a Berkeley street sweeper who had just finished his graveyard shift.

One neighbor claimed the person who shot Jackson was a cousin who had been waiting for him on the front porch and that the cousin lived in a back unit on the property. Neighbors said the gunman also stole the victim's car, running over him as he fled.

At 1:27 p.m., officers with the San Francisco police department responded to the 1100 block of Donner Avenue in San Francisco on a report of a shooting and located a man suffering from a gunshot wound.

The victim was transported to the hospital and later died.

Investigators determined Jefferson was a suspect in that homicide as well.
