Suspect Arrested For Trying To Kidnap 5-Year-Old Child In Emeryville

EMERYVILLE (CBS SF) -- A male suspect has been arrested for attempting to kidnap a five-year-old child in Emeryville Friday afternoon, police said.

Officers who responded to the intersection of 53rd Street and San Pablo Avenue at about 2 p.m. after receiving a report of a man attempting to kidnap a young child were able to locate and detain a suspect matching the description that the caller provided, according to police.

The child's mother told police that the 5-year-old was being held by a family member when the male suspect approached and attempted to grab the child.

The man tried to take the child twice but was unsuccessful and the family member immediately began to scream for help, which caused the male suspect to flee, police said.

The suspect has been arrested on suspicion of attempted kidnapping, child endangerment and violating his probation, according to police.

Investigators determined that the suspect acted on his own so there aren't any other persons of interest, police said.

Emeryville police said anyone who saw the incident should call their criminal investigations unit at (510) 596-3700.
