Stolen Rabbits Returned To Walnut Creek Kids' Center, Thieves Leave Note Full Of Misspellings
WALNUT CREEK (KPIX 5) – With Easter just a few days away, a bunny burglary was no joke for kids at the Valle Verde Children's Center at Walnut Creek.
It was a schoolyard tale that didn't smell right from the beginning.
"People, like teenager girls and teenager boys, I don't know how much, decided to steal the bunnies," five-year-old Daniella Soto Maynez told KPIX 5.
Dutchess, Buster, and Ginger survived the hare-raising escapade after six older kids, mostly girls, climbed over the hutch fence and made off with the bunnies last week.
"We always protected them against predators, night predators, which we thought would be how they would have a problem. We never thought that kids would do it," said Christine Muller, director of the children's center.
Word went out on social media and parents with brand new pets realized the bunnies were hot. The bunnies were returned within 48 hours.
Then there's the note. Young criminals have to learn, there's no spell check on ransom, or apology, notes.
"Sorry we feel bad about taking them from the kids. Good intensians (sic), only bad idea," The letter was signed, "Bunny theifs" (sic).
"I think they were trying to cover it up, a little bit," Muller said.
No charges will be brought, but the six will come do community service this week to pay for the rabbit robbery. The six culprits are students at Northgate High School.
