Stolen Car Torched, Causes Vegetation Fire In San Leandro

SAN LEANDRO (CBS SF) -- A stolen vehicle was abandoned in a San Leandro creek and set on fire Monday afternoon, an Alameda County fire spokeswoman said.

Alameda County firefighters responded at 3:42 p.m. to a report of a fire in the 1100 block of Tulip Lane, spokeswoman Aisha Knowles said.

It was determined to be a vehicle fire that had become a vegetation fire, Knowles said.

Knowles later added that the vehicle had been reported stolen. It was apparently abandoned in San Leandro Creek between Tulip Lane and nearby railroad tracks, then set on fire.

The blaze produced enough smoke to be visible from the San Leandro BART station as well as Interstate Highway 880 at the Davis Street exit.

Firefighters had the blaze under control within 10 minutes of arrival, according to Knowles.

There were no reported injuries as a result of the fire.
