Stingray Caught On Camera in Downtown Oakland's Lake Merritt

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- If you didn't know that Oakland's Lake Merritt was brackish salt and freshwater, here's proof, as a saltwater batray, a type of stingray glides along the sunny shallows of the downtown "lake."

Ashley Garver captured the rare sight on her mobile phone and posted it to Instagram.

She writes on her blog, "Wonders are all around us. Be open and see. #StingRay (at Lake Merritt-Uptown Oakland)."

The batray favors warm shallow areas, eating mollusks and shrimp, and is highly adaptable to varying salinity, making its visit to Lake Merritt normal, but getting caught on camera is still pretty rare.
