Stanford Water Policy Forum Draws Facebook COO; Keynote Speech From Gov. Brown

STANFORD (KCBS)— California's water shortages are drawing the attention of Silicon Valley and Governor Jerry Brown. The water policy forum, held at Stanford, was opened by Facebook Chief Operating Officer Sheryl Sandberg.

"Everything companies like mine do is based on energy and water." Sandberg noted that while much of Silicon Valley deals in the so-called "knowledge economy," it's still dependent on the old resource economy.

Governor Brown said water would be one of his top priorities if elected to another term in office and gave a keynote address at the forum titled 'New Directions For U.S. Water Policy' where he stressed that California's water issues as complex as they are old, going back to work he did on water supply during his first two terms in office.

"It'll be controversial. The issues have not been fully resolved, but like energy and climate change that have been very pretentious, but have led to very productive initiatives; the same will be true of water and it will be something that I'm going to put front and center," he said.

Brown said a good first start was the groundwater-regulation bill that he signed into law just a couple of months ago.
