Students Seeking Fossil Fuel Divestment Meet With Stanford President, End Sit-In
STANFORD (CBS / AP) — Stanford University officials say students who staged a weeklong sit-in outside the campus administration office to demand the university divest in fossil fuel companies ended their demonstration after meeting with the school's president.
The San Francisco Chronicle reports the students ended their sit-in Friday after meeting with Stanford University President John Hennessy, who told them he would propose their ideas for heavier divestment from fossil-fuel companies to the board of trustees.
The rallies, organized by the campus group Fossil Free Stanford, called for the university to halt all investment in industries that use fossil fuels after the board decided in May 2014 it would no longer invest in organizations that use coal.
Student activists kicked off the protest Monday, after around 100 of them gathered outside the administration building, demanding an audience with the president.
