Stanford Teams Violated NCAA Rules, Fined $5K

STANFORD (AP) -- Stanford's football and softball teams have been found guilty of multiple NCAA violations and the school received a $5,000 fine.

The school announced the violations on Thursday. One football player received about $3,500 in impermissible benefits and the softball team violated the participation rule that limits practice and playing time to 20 hours per week.

These are Stanford's first major violations, which occurred in 2014.

The school ended the summer offseason housing program that led to the football violation. Softball coach John Rittman was asked to resign in 2014 and his assistants were not brought back after those violations were discovered. The school also imposed limits on practice time.

The NCAA accepted those punishments, which were self-imposed by the school, and issued a public reprimand.

The NCAA also determined the school did not show a lack of institutional control.
