South Bay Pot Proponents Planning To Offer Free 'Weed For Votes' During Upcoming Election

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A coalition of pro-marijuana activists think they have sparked an idea that could help get like-minded local politicians in office. They say they will offer discounts or giveaways of pot to people who can prove they vote during next week's primary election.

"To encourage turn-out for several closely contested races, including the mayoral race, collectives are providing discounts and even free weed to encourage their supporters to vote," the Silicon Valley Cannabis Coalition said in a press release.

The group has even suggested a slate of preferred candidates for San Jose and Santa Clara County offices.

"We have a huge opportunity to make a large impact in who runs San Jose," said John Lee, Director of the SVCC.

The coalition said they will announce the clubs participating in the "Weed for Votes" program Monday. Those interested are asked to display an "I Voted" sticker or ballot stub as proof of voting.

Organizers are also asking people to turn up at Tuesday's San Jose City Council meeting to protest proposed regulations that would severely limit pot club operations within the city.
