'Sonoma Aroma' Filling North Bay Noses With Poop Smell

SEBASTOPOL (KCBS) -- Sonoma County is playing host to an annual tradition - the smell of poop in the air.

Farmers in the county are priming their land with cow manure.

The "seasonal aroma," as county resident Tom Kirk puts it is just something you get used to.

"My wife keeps saying, 'is that cat excrement?' Oh no, that's just a combination of the manure and our funky plumbing," Kirk told KCBS.

It's been called the "Sonoma Aroma."

"It's not as bad as it used to be, fly-wise," county resident Katie said.

The flies have been known to prompt restaurant-diners to avoid outdoor seating.

Wine lovers say it messes with their sense of smell.

Bob Tuttle says to get over it.

"If you're going to be in the country, this is pretty much what you get. So, if you don't like it – move."
