Some Bay Area Police Dogs Getting Vests To Protect Them From Gunshots, Knives

OAKLAND (CBS SF) -- Police dogs in the Bay Area are getting some new, sophisticated gear to protect them as they go after criminals.

The Alameda County Sheriff's Office Wednesday showed off the special vests K-9's will be wearing as they go after a suspect.

Each vest costs about $1,200, and is custom fitted, and protect the dogs from bullets and knives.

The vests also can be fitted with g-p-s units for tracking and surveillance cameras.

"Each dog after they're fully trained, after they're purchased from the supplier, they, they are valued at about 15 to 20 thousand dollars per dog. So we need to, we need to protect that investment," Alex Jose of the Police & Working K-9 Foundation said.

The public helps pay for the vests through donations.

The police and working K-9 foundation holds its big fundraiser this weekend at dozens of Bay Area pet supply stores.
