Driver killed in Livermore after speeding vehicle flies off Interstate 580 offramp
A driver died Tuesday evening in Livermore after crashing along Interstate Highway 580, the California Highway Patrol said.
The crash happened at about 8:42 p.m. on westbound I-580 at the Isabel Avenue off-ramp. The CHP said officers arrived to find a 2003 Audi A4 convertible in the grass field, just south of the off-ramp. In the driver's seat of the vehicle was a 45-year-old man who was dead at the scene. The Alameda County Coroner's Bureau identified him as Livermore resident Jonathan Walker.
The CHP said its investigation determined that the man had been driving recklessly, at speeds of approximately 90 mph, before taking the exit. The Audi driver also made an aggressive maneuver to pass a slower-moving Honda, and in doing so, lost control and flew off the off-ramp, overturning multiple times down an embankment, according to the CHP.
There were no other occupants in the vehicle, and no other drivers were involved in the crash. The CHP said that the Honda driver stopped at the scene and provided information to officers.
It was not known as of Tuesday morning whether alcohol or drugs were a factor in the crash. The CHP said the off-ramp was closed for over three hours to retrieve evidence and recover the Audi.
