SoCal Man Arrested In Hit-And-Run Crash That Killed UC Santa Cruz Student

SANTA CRUZ (CBS SF) -- Santa Cruz police announced Tuesday they have arrested a San Bernardino County man as a suspect in a hit-and-run collision that killed a University of California at Santa Cruz student on Oct. 30.

Jesus Covarrubias, 26, of Rancho Cucamonga, was arrested on suspicion of felony hit and run on Monday after he came to the county jail and allegedly "indicated he was responsible for the fatal hit-and-run collision," the Police Department said.

The agency said that when detectives sought to interview him, he became uncooperative and refused to give a statement. He was booked into county jail on a $10,000 bond, police said.

The victim in the collision was Alexandra Arceneaux, 20. She was walking across state Highway 1 with friends after a Halloween party and was not in a marked crosswalk when she was struck by a silver-colored Honda sport utility vehicle at about 1:55 a.m. on Oct. 30, according to police.

The vehicle driver immediately drove away, police said. Arceneaux was hospitalized with critical injuries and died of the injuries on Saturday.

The Police Department said officers also recovered the 2011 silver Honda CR-V allegedly driven in the collision. It was found in Boulder Creek on a turnout near Junction Park.
