Small Quake Hits Along Hayward Fault Near Union City
UNION CITY (CBS SF) -- A small quake registering 2.8 hit near Union City, along the Hayward Fault at 1:38 p.m. Friday afternoon, according to U.S. Geological Survey seismographs.
There are no initial reports of damage, and with a quake this small, there are unlikely to be any problems.
The Hayward Fault is an active seismic area, moving just under a quarter-inch to one-third inch per year. It runs from San Pablo Bay to Fremont, traveling a path through the East Bay hills before connecting to the Calaveras Fault, possibly 3 miles under the surface.
IT has a 27 percent probability of triggering a massive magnitude 6.7 or larger quake in the next 30 years, according to USGS.gov.
