Small Plane Crashes in San Jose Neighborhood; Three Injured
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- A plane crashed Sunday afternoon into a garage attached to a home near Reid-Hillview Airport in San Jose, a Federal Aviation Administration spokesman and fire officials said.
The crash of a Cessna 172 was reported at 3:01 p.m. in the 2100 block Evelyn Avenue about 300 yards northwest of the airport, FAA spokesman Ian Gregor and San Jose fire Capt. Mike Van Elgort said.
Authorities said the plane experienced mechanical issues shortly after taking off and was attempting to return to the airport. The plane clipped trees and electrical wires before slamming into the lawn and skidding into a garage attached to a home.
"We are thankful it hit where it did instead of into people standing on the side of the road or a car on the road," Van Elgort said
Van Elgort said two men and one woman were in the Cessna. One of the plane's occupants suffered major injuries while the others had minor injuries. All three were transported to Regional Medical Center in San Jose.
Three people were inside of the home at the time of the crash, but escaped injuries.
The plane had been rented by a flying club called Squadron 2.
