Hundreds Of SJSU Students Unable To Move Into New Dorms

SAN JOSE (KPIX 5) – Hundreds of incoming freshmen at San Jose State University who planned to move into new dormitories are being forced to live elsewhere on campus, due to construction delays.

The 820 students, who are expected to move onto campus on Saturday, will be housed at the 1960s-era residence halls known as "The Bricks." Displaced students will be living at the old residence halls for possibly the next month. They will live three to a room.

University officials said completion of the new, $128 million Campus Village 2 residence halls has been delayed by a month, despite construction crews working double shifts, seven days a week. Construction began two years ago and SJSU described the work as finishing touches.

The university said the affected students will pay lower housing fees while living at The Bricks. Officials said room and board at Campus Village 2 is $16,000 per school year.

After the students move out, The Bricks are slated for demolition to make way for new campus facilities.

Crews busily assembled bed frames and mattresses on Friday to prepare for move-in day.
