Sightseeing, Distracted Driver Causes Head-On Crash On Highway 92 In San Mateo

SAN MATEO (CBS SF) -- Three people were taken to a hospital Saturday morning after a head-on collision on state Highway 92 in San Mateo, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision occurred when a man in his 20s, who was driving a Nissan Altima west on Highway 92 near Interstate Highway 280, became distracted, according to CHP Officer Art Montiel.

"He was contemplating the scenery and allowed the vehicle to cross into the eastbound lane, where his vehicle ran into a red Toyota Celica head-on," Montiel said.

A man in his 30s was driving the Celica and his 7-year-old daughter was also in the vehicle, according to Montiel.

Everyone involved was wearing their seatbelt and the airbags on both vehicles successfully deployed, Montiel said. Still, all three victims were transported to a hospital on complaints of pain.

The driver of the Nissan also suffered minor abrasions from the seatbelt, according to Montiel.

A Sig-alert was issued at 10:44 a.m. due to the accident blocking both westbound lanes of traffic. Highway 92 reopened at 12:10 p.m.
