The incident happened in a parking lot at around 4:40 p.m. on East 14th St. at 162nd Ave. Police initially received a call about a theft at a thrift store.

Upon arrival, deputies located a dark SUV with a man and woman inside. When a deputy went to run the vehicle's license plate in the police system, the driver threw the car into reverse at a high rate of speed and drove toward the deputy and his motorcycle.

Three deputies then opened fire on the two suspects in the vehicle, killing the man inside. The woman was taken to a nearby hospital with gunshot wounds.

"My understanding was that they had already contacted them and that everything had seemed somewhat OK, and then it wasn't OK," said JD Nelson, spokesperson for the Alameda County Sheriff's Office.

Marta Guzman lives across the street from the thrift store. She described the scene to KPIX 5.

[Translated from Spanish] "I didn't understand what was going on. It seemed like fireworks," she said. "I grabbed my three-year-old child and went inside."

A dog was also with the suspects in the vehicle and was uninjured. It was unclear what the suspects had stolen from the thrift store or why they decided to attempt driving off.

The woman was said to be in stable condition on Wednesday evening.
