Shell Says Oil Leak In Bay Near Martinez Refinery Was Result Of Tests On The Line

MARTINEZ (CBS SF)— Roughly two barrels of an oil and water mixture leaked into the Bay near the Shell refinery in Martinez on Tuesday, company officials said.

Around 4 p.m., Shell employees reported a leak of an oil and water mixture from a crude oil line at the Shell Martinez wharf.

Shell officials said the leak appeared to have been the result of a test being conducted on the line.

They said the leak was contained within 30 minutes.

Shell officials estimated that approximately two barrels of oil -- or about 84 gallons -- leaked into the water.

Company employees deployed absorbent boom and skimmer boats to contain and recover the oil, Shell officials said.
