SF's Folsom Street Off-Ramp Closure Begins Tuesday

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Bay Bridge commuters who use the Folsom Street off-ramp exit will have to use an alternate route due to a six month partial closure beginning the morning of Sept. 23.

The ramp is a major route for commuters heading to the Financial District. But only the right side of the ramp that veers to Folsom Street will close. The left side to Fremont Street will stay open and be the main alternate. Drivers can also take the Harrison Street Exit and connect with Folsom Street at Fremont Street.

The project is an effort to improve pedestrian movement in the area.

"We think there will be a lot of safety improvements that will lead to new sidewalks, a new traffic signal," said Transportation Authority spokesmen Eric Young. "We realize that this is taking place at a time when there is a lot of activity, a lot of traffic moving around in the area. But we're confident drivers are going to be able to see the notices we put out."

The city says it has to build a new retaining wall and that takes time.
