San Francisco Police Chief Spells Out Bay To Breakers Rules: 'Nudity's Not Okay'
SAN FRANCISCO (KCBS)— San Francisco Mayor Ed Lee revved up the troops at City Hall on Tuesday for this weekend's Bay To Breakers foot race, but city officials want to make it clear that this event is about having fun while being safe.
So far 40,000 runners have registered for the big event Sunday, May 18th, which is boasted as the oldest consecutively run annual footrace in the world.
"This iconic race is celebrating its 103-year history," Lee proclaimed.
The 12K race stretches from the Embarcadero, west out onto the Great Highway.
The early part of the race begins as a competition with serious runners followed by the tens of thousands who attend; some who just want to have fun in their crazy costumes, others wearing nothing at all.
Supervisor London Breed sent out an invitation to the latter.
"There are people without clothes and if we have a day like this, there will be even more, but that's what makes San Francisco so incredible," Breed said.
San Francisco Police Chief Greg Suhr went through the rules of the race announcing; no alcohol, no floats, no backpacks and no nudity.
"Nudity's not okay and we're not naïve that that might not happen, but deferring to those who might not have six packs, there are going to be kids and families," he said.
Suhr said there will be a 20-percent increase in security because of the Boston Marathon bombing to insure that everyone has a fun and safe event.
