SF Muni To Pull Cable Cars, Streetcars For 49ers Game

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS/AP) -- The San Francisco Municipal Transit Agency is planning to take its historic cable cars and streetcars off the streets during and after Sunday's 49ers playoff game.

Muni officials want to protect the cable cars and streetcars from rowdy fans and troublemakers after the Niners win -- or lose -- in Seattle. Transit officials also say they want to protect riders from hurting themselves.

Downtown cable cars and F-Market street cars will not be in service in the afternoon and into the night. Muni's electric trolley buses will be out of service all-day Sunday.

Muni officials say the transit system will use buses on some cable car and rail lines during and after the game that starts at 3:30 p.m.

Muni will stop service on the California cable car line at 2 p.m. with the Powell-Hyde and Powell-Mason cable cars running only between Fisherman's Wharf and Chinatown beginning at 4 p.m.

Buses will substitute for cable cars between Washington and Powell streets, and on the entirety of the California line.

Diesel or hybrid buses will replace Muni's trolley buses. Starting at 5 p.m., buses will carry N-Judah passengers between 22nd Avenue at Judah Street and Church and Duboce streets.

Regular rail service will continue on the rest of the line.

These lines will face minor rerouting:
5-Fulton, 6-Parnassus, 9-San Bruno, 10-Townsend, 12-Folsom Pacific, 14-Mission, 14L-Mission Limited, 19-Polk, 21-Hayes, 27-Bryant, 30-Stockton, 31-Balboa, 38-Geary, 44-O'Shaughnessy, 45-Union/Stockton, 48-Quintara/24th Street, 49-Mission/Van Ness , 67-Bernal Heights and 71-Haight/Noriega.
