SF-Marin Food Bank Sets Goal Of 2,000 Turkey Donations By Thanksgiving

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- As the holiday season approaches, the San Francisco-Marin Food Bank has begun asking residents to donate turkeys so they can reach their goal of making more than 10 million meals this year.

To help the Food Bank reach its goal, this morning Central Valley-based poultry company Foster Farms donated 600 turkeys to organization's San Francisco warehouse, located at 900 Pennsylvania Avenue, according to the Food Bank.

The donation is a significant boost for the organization, however it still is in need of 1,400 more turkeys in order to reach its goal of 2,000 turkeys. The turkeys will help the organization supply 70 of its partner agencies with traditional holiday meals on Thanksgiving Day and the rest of the holiday season, Food Bank officials said.

Partner agencies include Compass Family Services, Bernal Heights Neighborhood Center and West Marin Senior Services.

"We feel a special kind of responsibility to provide turkeys at Thanksgiving, so that everyone in our community can enjoy a traditional holiday meal," Food Bank Director Paul Ash said in a statement. "It's coming down to crunch time for the Food Bank and we're asking our generous community to help by donating food or funds."

In addition to the turkeys, the Food Bank will distribute more than 32,000 whole chickens as well as sweet potatoes and other seasonal produce, rice, beverages and other holiday foods to its 250-outlet food pantry network during Thanksgiving week, according to Food Bank officials.

To donate to the Food Bank or volunteer this holiday season, residents can visit www.sfmfoodbank.org for more information.
