SF Fire Truck Strikes, Critically Injures Cyclist

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- A bicyclist suffered critical injuries after a fire truck struck him early Saturday morning in the city's Downtown/Civic Center neighborhood, according to the chief of the San Francisco Fire Department.

Fire Chief Joanne Hayes-White said Engine 1 was returning to quarters after clearing a call at 2:12 a.m. when the truck struck a bicyclist at the intersection of Mason and Turk streets.

The cyclist was traveling west on Turk Street, Hayes-White said.

The bicyclist suffered critical injuries and was transported to San Francisco General Hospital, Hayes-White said.

Hayes-White said the department is cooperating fully with the San Francisco Police Department and their investigation into the incident.

"Our thoughts are with the injured bicyclist and his family, as well as with the members that were on Engine 1," Hayes-White said in a statement.

A call to a San Francisco police spokesperson was not immediately returned.
