2 Earthquakes Strike San Juan Bautista In 10-Minute Span, Shaking Felt In South Bay

SAN JUAN BAUTISTA (CBS SF) – Two earthquakes struck within a 10 minute span near the town of San Juan Bautista in San Benito County late Wednesday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey's automated seismograph alert network.

The USGS reports a magnitude 3.8 earthquake struck at 10:21 p.m., at a depth of 3.9 miles. At 10:26, a magnitude 4.2 earthquake struck the same area, at a depth of 4.1 miles.

Deeper quakes are less noticeable while a shallow quake--in the 0 to 40 mile depth range--can feel much stronger than their actual reported magnitude. Quakes just below the earth's surface, in the 0 to 10 miles range, can cause even more damage at lower magnitudes.

The quakes were felt in much of Santa Clara County, including San Jose, Morgan Hill and Gilroy. Visitors to the USGS website from Hollister, Santa Cruz, Salinas and Monterey also reported feeling the quakes.
