Selfies With Marked Ballot Illegal In California

SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) -- Many California voters broke the law Tuesday without even knowing it – by snapping selfies of their ballots.

A California law prohibits voters from showing their marked ballots, and taking pictures in polling places.

But, Assemblyman Marc Levine wants to change that law to encourage voting.

"We need to do everything we can to encourage more voting.  I think ballot selfies is sharing voting, and that voter experience on social media is a great way to encourage greater participation in California," Levine said.

Levine says he plans to introduce legislation to legalize ballot selfies, saying they are protected political speech.
