Santa Rosa Couple Charged In Strangling Death Of Dog Tied To Post

SANTA ROSA (CBS/AP) — Police say a Santa Rosa couple will face animal cruelty charges after their dog was strangled to death by the cable tying it to a backyard post.

The Santa Rosa Press Democrat reports police responded to a report Saturday that a dog was in distress at the home of 62-year-old Juan Fernando Favila Alvarez and 53-year-old Loreto Gracia Favila.

A second call came in before officers could arrive saying the dog died. Police arrived to find the dog had wrapped the cable around the post repeatedly, shortening it each time and eventually cutting off the animal's airway.

The shortened cable left empty food and water bowls out of reach on the back porch. The couple told police they had left town Friday with plans to return Sunday.
