Santa Cruz To Triple Fines For Bad Behavior On Halloween

SANTA CRUZ (KPIX 5) – Downtown Santa Cruz can get pretty rowdy on Halloween. But this year, breaking the rules will come with hefty fines.

"We have all hands on deck this weekend. We'll have well over 150 officers present in our downtown corridor and in our city. We want everybody to have a happy and safe Halloween," said Santa Cruz Police spokesperson Joyce Blashke.

The men and women in blue, the real ones, at least, will be handing out very real fines for anyone who gets out of line during this year's celebration.

"Triple fines are expensive. And we use triple fines as a deterrent, to model good behavior for our visitors in Santa Cruz," Blashke said.

For example, a littering violation on Halloween will cost $288. Having an open container will cost a Halloween reveler $480. Violations for graffiti, urinating in public or trespassing will cost $576.

Last year, the police department says they arrested 45 people on Halloween, most of them for public drunkenness.
