San Jose City Council Vote Could Ban Riding Bicycles On Downtown Sidewalks

SAN JOSE (KCBS)— It may soon be against the rules to ride a bicycle on the sidewalk in downtown San Jose.

The City Council is set to vote on a ban on sidewalk cycling Tuesday after 18 months of talks with seniors, cyclists and downtown businesses.

Transportation officials are recommending the ban despite their efforts to get people in San Jose to drive less and bike more.

Bicyclists are already banned from riding on sidewalks in most major California cities, including San Francisco (with some exceptions, including The Embarcadero), Oakland and Los Angeles.
