Vehicle Fatally Strikes Woman On Lawrence Expressway In Santa Clara

SANTA CLARA (CBS SF) – An elderly woman pushing a shopping cart was struck and killed by a pickup truck in Santa Clara early Monday morning, according to the California Highway Patrol.

The collision was reported around 6:30 a.m. on Lawrence Expressway at Cabrillo Avenue, CHP officials said.

An initial report indicated the woman was in a wheelchair, but further investigation showed she was pushing a shopping cart and crossing the street on a red light, according to the CHP.

Oncoming traffic slowed down while the woman was on the roadway. A pickup truck driver changed lanes to avoid a collision and struck the pedestrian, CHP officials said.

Firefighter paramedics performed CPR on the woman at 6:42 a.m. before pronouncing her dead at around 6:45 a.m., CHP officials said.

The woman hasn't been identified as of late this morning.

Three lanes of southbound Lawrence expressway were blocked for about two hours after the collision, according to the CHP.
