San Mateo Police Arrest 2 In Brothel Bust Across From High School

SAN MATEO (KPIX 5) -- Police on the Peninsula say they've just busted a brothel.

Cops say it was operating across the street from a high school, along busy 20th Avenue in San Mateo.

The house, located across the street from Serra High School was quiet Tuesday night, lit only a by a porch light.

But or the past month neighbors say the now-empty house was bustling with activity, particularly late at night.

Neighbor Sue Loeffler described the activity she and her neighbors saw at the property.

"Foot traffic, people coming and going, people texting, cars moving in and out - many per night," Loeffler said.

The home and its occupants were busted Monday for, as San Mateo police Sgt. Amanda Von Glahn calls it, "operating a house of ill fame," as

That's cop speak for running a brothel.

Loeffler says there was something odd about the home the moment the moving trucks arrived on Halloween.

"They didn't have garbage pickup. The moving trucks came and dropped off beds -- I mean, we don't miss that," Loeffler said.

The home sits just a block from San Mateo City Hall.

Neighbors filled out online police reports about the suspicious activity and the subsequent investigation led to two arrests.

Loeffler said, "Never underestimate the power of your good neighbors."

The San Mateo Police Department is now working with the women who were at that home to get them assistance.
