San Mateo Bridge Closed, Plan For Delays, Leave Early

SAN FRANCISCO (KPIX 5) -- Getting across the bay is taking a lot longer this Memorial Day holiday weekend because of the San Mateo Bridge closure.

This is Part 2 -- the final phase of Caltrans' resurfacing and maintenance project.

Caltrans shut down lanes in both directions around 10 p.m., Friday night.

The bridge is expected to reopen Monday morning at 5 a.m.

Caltrans said work is progressing as planned commuters should not expect an early opening.

"They're going to use as much time as they can to advance this project," said Caltrans spokesperson Stephen Williams.

KCBS Traffic: Current Road Conditions

Approaching the bridge on Highway 92, the eastbound closure starts at Foster City Boulevard. From the westbound approach, the closure starts at Clawiter Road, in Hayward.

Drivers can use the Dumbarton Bridge and the Bay Bridge as alternate routes. Be warned, traffic is definitely heavier than usual. Plan for delays, and leave early.

If you are taking BART, be aware the line between the Fremont and Coliseum stations is closed all day Saturday and Sunday, and will reopen Monday at 8 a.m.
