San Jose Sharks, Gordon Biersch Team Up For New Beer

SAN JOSE (KCBS) – Just in time for hockey season, the San Jose Sharks are getting into the beer business.

The first bottles of "Chum" red ale rolled off the line at the Gordon Biersch brewery in San Jose on Thursday.

"We've been working on it for quite a while," brewer Dan Gordon told KCBS.

"I don't think hockey players would ever survive without beer, so Chum is their answer to a complete and balanced diet. Keeps them on the ice, flowing gracefully," Gordon said, jokingly.

Sharks chief marketing officer Flavil Hampsten, said coming up with the name was a no-brainer.

"Obviously Chum makes sense because that's what ocean dwelling sharks are accustomed to eating and tasting," he said.

Chum will be available at Safeway stores and at the SAP Center next month, as the defending Western Conference champions take to the ice.
