San Jose Installs Metal Fence To Deter Runners, Partiers On Popular Staircase
SAN JOSE (CBS SF) -- The city of San Jose has created a bottleneck by installing a chain link fence on a staircase popular for exercise in an effort to cut down on foot traffic and noise.
The staircase in the Communications Hill neighborhood of San Jose has attracted exercise enthusiasts, and complaints from neighbors over noise, litter, and parking problems prompted the city council to install the fence, which cuts off half of the staircase.
Their aim was to deter runners, but some couldn't resist, like Andrea Lopez.
"I like doing my cardio here. It's a lot more fun than running on a treadmill all day," Lopez said.
Nearby resident Ashley Iupati says the temporary fence is a bit of an eyesore, and hasn't stopped the partiers and late night noise that keeps her awake.
"I haven't noticed a whole of of people at night, but there is still that issue. It still hasn't been solved," Iupati said.
