Crews Control Brush Fires Burning Along I-280 Near Downtown San Jose

SAN JOSE (CBS SF) – Firefighters were able to control several brush fires burning along Interstate 280 near Downtown San Jose Wednesday afternoon.

According to the San Jose Fire Department, the fires broke out along the freeway near the Meridian Avenue exit. No structures are currently being threatened, but one vehicle was destroyed.

KCBS has reported that the fire department has blocked the right lane of Southbound 280 and that the backup stretches several miles to the Lawrence Expressway interchange.

As of about 5:15 p.m., firefighters said while progress is being made, the fires were not yet under control.

By 6:20 p.m., CHP were reporting that all lanes of I-280 were reopened at Race Street with residual delays.

The cause of the fire is under investigation.
