San Francisco May Ban Tobacco At All Baseball Venues
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) – As professional baseball players begin Spring Training, a San Francisco supervisor is expected to propose legislation banning tobacco use in all city venues where baseball is played.
According to Supervisor Mark Farrell's office, the supervisor plans to introduce the bill on Tuesday. If approved, San Francisco would become the first city to ban chewing tobacco and other tobacco products at all baseball venues.
A statement from the supervisor cited numbers from the Centers for Disease Control, which said 14.7 percent of high school boys and 8.8 percent of all high school students use smokeless tobacco.
The supervisor is expected to hold a news conference about his bill at the Moscone Park Baseball Field on Chestnut Street Tuesday afternoon.
Major League Baseball allows players to use smokeless tobacco, while the product is banned in the minor-league level.
