San Francisco No Longer Among 10 'Gayest Cities In America'
SAN FRANCISCO (CBS SF) - San Francisco's rep as the most LGBT-friendly city in the United States appears to be slipping, according to a newly-released ranking from The Advocate, a publication targeted at the gay community.
Not only did the city by the bay fail to crack the top ten of this year's "2014's Gayest Cities In America" rankings, it fell out of the Bay Area lead. Oakland, ranked at number nine, notched the highest local score thanks to the highest percentage of lesbian couple households in the U.S.
"Though nearby San Fran is the granddaddy of urban gay meccas, the much more affordable nearby Oakland is at least as diverse," claims the Advocate.
Anticipating some shock emanating from The Castro, author Matthew Breen urged San Francisco residents to "calm down…Everyone knows your still the gayest thing going." No specific reason for the falloff was listed, other than the fact that it would be no fun to have San Francisco, Los Angeles and New York top the list each year. The city was credited for its nightlife and a "vibrant bear and trans communities."
Points were awarded based on "hidden factors" that demonstrate widespread gay culture such as LGBT elected officials, popular gay bars and even hosting a Mariah Carey or Lady Gaga concert.
Washington D.C., Pasadena and Seattle were the top three spots this year. See the full rankings here.
